May 16 2017. The world woke up to the news of a US teenager who died from a caffeine overdose, despite being in good health. As coffee lovers, we were intrigued by this story and decided to look at what data can tell us about coffee - its effect on the body, and its geographical spread.
There are three variables to take into consideration when calculating your personalised daily coffee intake - your weight, your choice of coffee, and the strength of the blend you drink.

FOR A HEALTHY ADULT (avg. 67 kg)
Experts recommend 6 mg of caffeine per kg, or 400 mg. If you prefer your coffee as cappucino, americano, mocha or latte, then you should limit yourself to 2 cups per day. Those who like a classical espresso, your recommended limit is 5 per day, while instant coffee fans can go up to 7 in a day, without crossing the recommended limit for a healthy adult. The chart on the right will project a personalized limit for you once you insert your weight in kilos. |

Where do people consume more coffee?
Continental Europe & North America. Nordic and German-speaking countries before all.
On average, a world citizen consumes 3.8 kg of coffee per year, or 154.7 mg per day. This comes 255 mg short of the recommended daily limit for a healthy adult.
However, there are geographies where the average person consumes way over the global average. North and Central Europe is home to the largest number of coffee abusers with 9 out of 10 countries in the Top 10 being located there (see the chart on the right). Luxembourg plays in its own league when it comes to coffee consumption. The average person there consumes double the coffee an average Finn does, and Finland comes second in this chart. Coffee is also consumed above average in North America, Southern Europe, the Western Balkans, and Lebanon (the only Middle Eastern country to consume above average). Australians drink exactly as much as the world average. |

Everybody loves coffee?
Despite being produced there, coffee is not so heavily consumed in Africa or Latin America.
The UK, Poland, India and Russia are also not abusing the caffeine rich drink.
